On 7th December, Innovation Forum Manchester was excited to host a new type of event: “Pitch in a Pub”. This gave science and technology entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch their business proposals, which was followed by a networking session, all in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
On this occasion, we had the opportunity to hear from 2 start-ups: NeuroDynamics and Atomic Mechanics. Iwan Roberts, the representative from NeuroDynamics, a biotechnology start-up based at the University of Manchester, talked about his team’s dedication to developing novel solutions for peripheral nerve regeneration using next generation nerve conduits. It is worth mentioning that NeuroDynamics was the Life Science Award winner in the Innovation Forum IMAGINE IF! Final, held during the Leaders’ Conference (Oxford, 4-5th December). They were awarded 6 months of lab space in Switzerland.
The second pitch was from Christian Berger, part of Atomic Mechanics, a graphene spin-out based at the University of Manchester. Atomic Mechanics aims to design, sell and manufacture micro-electro-mechanical-system pressure sensors and touch interfaces based on thick film graphene-polymer membranes. These could be used in a variety of industries including automotive, oil and gas, medical or consumer electronics, providing improved resistance to shock & vibration, thermal stability, as well as long-term accuracy.
During the casual networking session, the participants had the opportunity to chat to our two businesses, ask them questions and learn more about their experience. We are proud that our communication and networking can help the science and technology community towards fulfilling their dreams. We are committed to making this type of event happen at least every two months, so keep an eye out for our next announcement!
Our next event, “IMAGINE IF! 2018: Business Essentials for STEM Start-ups” will be on the 1st February 2018, Manchester Metropolitan University. Do not miss this!
